What these numbers include
- Obligated dollars on prime contracts, orders and contract vehicles, as published on USAspending.gov.
- Every registration of the company and any subsidiary USAspending files under it, each transaction counted once.
- Not included: contract ceilings, Other Transaction agreements (kept out of USAspending), classified awards, and money earned as a subcontractor.
- The latest fiscal year keeps rising for a few months, because the Defense Department publishes contract actions after a 90-day delay.
Why these companies: they are the firms reporters most often write about, and each one contracts with the government directly. Software and cloud vendors that sell mostly through resellers are left out, because USAspending credits those sales to the reseller and a direct total would understate their federal business.
