Definition

The Defense Logistics Agency is the DOD's combat logistics support agency, managing the global supply chain for the military. DLA procures and distributes food, fuel, medical supplies, uniforms, construction materials, spare parts, and other supplies used by all military branches.

DLA is one of the largest purchasing agencies in the federal government, awarding over $40 billion annually in contracts. Unlike most defense agencies, DLA buys commodity-type goods — making it accessible to a wide range of commercial suppliers, not just defense specialists.

DLA uses the DIBBS (DLA Internet Bid Board System) portal for many of its solicitations, particularly for supply items. Many DLA contracts use long-term indefinite delivery contracts with regular delivery orders, providing predictable recurring revenue for suppliers.

DLA's small business office is active in finding small business sources for supply chain needs. If you manufacture or distribute products used by the military, DLA is a high-opportunity target agency.
