Definition

A capability statement (or cap statement) is a one-to-two page marketing document that summarizes your company's competencies, past performance, certifications, and differentiators for government buyers. It's the government contracting equivalent of a resume — the first document a contracting officer or prime contractor will ask for.

A strong capability statement includes: core competencies (what you do), past performance (proof you've done it), differentiators (why you're better), company data (NAICS codes, CAGE code, UEI, certifications), and contact information.

Capability statements are used at industry days, pre-bid conferences, matchmaking events, and when introducing yourself to prime contractors seeking subcontractors. Many agencies maintain vendor databases and request capability statements for inclusion.

Keep it to one page if possible, two pages maximum. Use your target agency's branding colors, reference relevant contract vehicles, and tailor the content to the specific opportunity or agency you're approaching.
